How to use the underarm crutch correctly
Using underarm crutches correctly is important to ensure safety, mobility, and to avoid discomfort or injury. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to use them properly:

1. Adjust the Crutches to the Correct Height
Underarm Pad Height: The underarm pad should be about 1-2 inches (2.5-5 cm) below your armpit when standing straight.
Handgrip Height: Adjust the handgrips so your elbows are slightly bent (about 15-30 degrees) when holding the grips.
Ensure the crutches are stable and secure before use.
2. Position Your Body Correctly
Stand upright with your weight supported by your hands on the handgrips, not your armpits. Resting on the underarm pads can cause nerve damage or discomfort.
Keep your shoulders relaxed and your head up.
3. Walking with Crutches
Move the crutches forward about 12 inches (30 cm) in front of you.
Step forward with your injured or weaker leg, placing it between the crutches.
Push down on the handgrips and swing your stronger leg forward to meet the injured leg.
Repeat the process, moving the crutches and your legs in a steady rhythm.
4. Sitting Down
Back up to the chair or surface until you feel it against your legs.
Hold both crutches in one hand (on the side of your injured leg) and use the other hand to grip the chair.
Lower yourself slowly into the chair.
5. Standing Up
Hold both crutches in one hand (on the side of your injured leg).
Push yourself up using the chair and your stronger leg.
Once standing, place one crutch under each arm.
6. Going Up Stairs
Place your stronger leg on the step first.
Push down on the crutches and lift your injured leg to the same step.
Bring the crutches up to the step.
7. Going Down Stairs
Place the crutches on the lower step first.
Lower your injured leg to the step.
Step down with your stronger leg.
Tips for Safe Use
Always wear non-slip shoes.
Avoid leaning on the underarm pads to prevent nerve damage.
Take your time and move carefully.
Keep the crutch tips dry and replace them if they become worn.
If you’re unsure about using crutches, consult a healthcare professional or physical therapist for guidance.
